9th form                                        15.10.20.

Types of Conditionals

Conditional sentences can be divided into Conditional 1 (or real condition), Conditionals 2 and 3 (unreal condition).
The first conditional shows that, from the speaker’s point of view, the situation is quite possible. In the main clause the Future forms or verbs in the Imperative Mood are used; in the clause of condition the present tense forms are used.

Example: If the weather is sunny tomorrow (this is quite probable), we’ll go on a hike.

The second conditional shows that, from the speaker’s point of view, the situation is improbable, and is unlikely to happen. The second conditional describes the present or future situation as unreal. In the main clause Would + infinitive should be used, in the clause of unreal condition the Past Simple or the Past Continuous should be used, for the verb ‘to be’ were is used for all persons.

Examples: I am impressed with your research papers. Of course, I would be more impressed if I understood them (but this is highly improbable).  If I were a writer (but I am not a writer, and this condition is unreal), I would invent a pen name.

The third conditional describes the past situation as unreal. In the main clause would + perfect infinitive (have done) should be used. In the clause of condition the Past Perfect is used.

Example: Mr. Bennet: “If I had known as much this morning (but I didn’t know it), I certainly wouldn’t have called on him (but I have already done it).”

Revising the Use of Tenses in the Clause of Real Condition

Open the brackets using the correct form of the verbs.
1. If I (not to find) the man, I never (to have) a rest so long as that fellow lives. 2. Arthur, if you (to go) to Paris, I (to join) you. 3. I (to do) all I can to make Arthur happy if he (to take) me with him. 4. Mary, Mike never (to finish) the report unless you (to help) him. 5. I am sure Mike (to go) with us provided he (to have) free time. 6. Unless it (to stop) snowing, we (not to go) to the country. 7. I (to attend) school tomorrow, if I (to be) better.
 Learning to Use Conditional 2

Change the following sentences into conditional 2 sentences. Example: I want to visit this exhibition, but I don’t have any free time. If I had some free time, I would visit this exhibition.

1. Excuse me, but I am unable to reply to your e-mail message immediately, as I can’t connect to the Internet. 2. I want to go shopping with you, but I am very busy at the moment. 3. I am sure you are a very talented student, but you don’t work hard enough to be top of the class. 4. The weather is too nasty to go camping. What a pity! 5. I do like this cell phone, but I won’t buy it, it’s too expensive.

Learning to Use Conditional 3

Write the correct form of the verbs in brackets to complete the conditional 3 sentences.
 1. None of this (to happen) if you (not to conduct) your work so recklessly and independently. 2. I chose the bed nearest the window, a mistake I (not to make) if I (to know) the policy in Glass House was to turn off the heat at night. 3. She couldn’t stop thinking about what (to happen) if they (to be caught).

We use used to + verb for talking about states or actions that were true or happened in the past, but are not true or do not happen now.

Can you give me some examples?
Yes, of course.
London’s nothing like it used to be!
She used to go away on really long trips.
OK. So now she doesn’t go away on really long trips?
Exactly. Used to is always for talking about actions or states in the past that are not true now.
The record shop I always used to visit is now a really cool café. (I don’t visit the place now.)
Why can’t you use the past simple?
Well, you can, of course. But we use used to to emphasise that the state or action is not true now or does not happen now.
What about the negative?
We use do in the past + not + the infinitive, use to + verb. The question is formed in a similar way.
He didn’t use to wear nice clothes and recently he’s been looking quite cool.
So what else did you use to go to London for?
That’s quite a long construction – three verbs!
Yes, but used to doesn’t change – it’s always in the past simple.
Always in the past simple? So you can’t use it in the present?
No, it’s a strange verb. We only use it in the past.
I think I used to use it in the present too.
Oh dear. You won’t any more, will you?
No, I didn’t use to know the rules, but now I do.

2. You can always use the past _______________ instead of used to.
3. We use used to to emphasise that the action or state is _______________ what happens now.
 4. Used to is followed by the _______________ verb.
5. To make questions and negatives with used to, we use did and _______________.

Reading
1

Read the extract from Air Babylon.

What are the answers to the questions, according to the text?

Read the extract again and mark the sentences T (true) or F (false).

1 Most airline passengers believe that the life jacket could save their life.

2 The passengers who inflated their life jackets too early didn't survive.

3 Customs officers can see through the mirror in Customs.

4 Passengers are often caught by customs officers because of their body language.

5 Small birds are more dangerous for planes than big birds.

6 Passengers get confused because what they can smell is not on the menu.

7 There aren't enough wheelchairs for all the people who need them.
8 One flight attendant sometimes makes sarcastic comments about passengers who don't really need a wheelchair.

The truth about air travel
Most airline passengers think it is laughable that a small yellow life jacket with a whistle will make any difference if the plane crashes into the sea. However, in some cases, like when  a hijacked Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 767 landed in the Indian Ocean in 1996, it did. Despite instructions from the cabin crew IlQl to preinflate their lifejackets inside the plane, several passengers did. They were unable to escape the lo rising water Inside the plane. But others, who followed the pilot's instructions, survived. So it is probably a good idea to look up from your magazine when the flight attendant is giving the safety demonstration.
Customs officers are watching everywhere. They are watching you from the moment you walk off the plane, while you are standing in Baggage Reclaim waiting for your bag, and especially when you come out the other side of  Customs, which is when people who are trying to smuggle something finally let their guard down and get caught. The large two-way mirror in Customs, (behind which customs officers sit and watch) is part of that process. As you walk  past, it makes you look taller and thinner. So you feel good about yourself and you relax and smile. That's when a customs officer suddenly appears and asks you to open your case ...
Birds  are one of the major problems for any airport when planes are taking off and landing. Any large bird can easily cause an accident. It flies into the engine, totally destroying itself and the machinery. Smaller birds are less of a problem. In some cases they can do some  damage, but usually they are just roasted. When this happens, there is often such a strong smell of roast bird that passengers on the plaine think a chicken is being cooked, and they are often surprised when they're given a choice of fish or beef at dinner!
Wheelchairs are a big problem for airline staff!  Not only is there always a shortage of them, but some of the people who request them often don`t need them at all. I`ve lost count off number of times I`ve pushed someone through the airport and then seen the person  jump up in Arrivals and move quikly towards their waiting relatives. One flight attendant gets so annoyed when this happens that as soon as the passenger gets out of the chair , she shouts to the other passengers, 'Ladies and gentlemen!  Another miracle, courtesy of the airline industry! After years in a wheelchair, he walks again!' The passenger is normally so embarrassed that he (and it's usually a 'he') disappears as quickly as he can.
2
Answer the questions:
1 How do you feel about flying?
2 How often do you fly? What for?
3 When was the last flight you took?
 Where did you fly to?
4 Have you ever ...
• been very delayed at an airport? How long for?
• missed a flight? Why?
• been stopped in Customs?
Were you carrying anything that you shouldn't have?
• had very bad turbulence on a flight? How did you feel? Was anyone on the flight injured?
• flown long haul? Did you get jet lag?
• flown or been upgraded to business class? What was it like?
 • been on a flight where there was an emergency?
What happened?
• sat next to a screaming baby on a flight (or a child that kept kicking your seat)? What did you do?

Reported questions

A reported question is when we tell someone what another person asked. To do this, we can use direct speech or indirect speech.
direct speech: 'Do you like working in sales?' he asked.
indirect speech: He asked me if I liked working in sales.
In indirect speech, we change the question structure (e.g. Do you like) to a statement structure (e.g. I like).
We also often make changes to the tenses and other words in the same way as for reported statements (e.g. have done → had donetoday → that day). You can learn about these changes on the Reported speech 1 – statements page.

Yes/no questions

In yes/no questions, we use if or whether to report the question. If is more common.
'Are you going to the Helsinki conference?'
  • He asked me if I was going to the Helsinki conference.
'Have you finished the project yet?'
  • She asked us whether we'd finished the project yet.

Questions with a question word

In whatwherewhywhowhen or how questions, we use the question word to report the question.
'What time does the train leave?'
  • He asked me what time the train left.
'Where did he go?'
  • She asked where he went.

Reporting verbs

The most common reporting verb for questions is ask, but we can also use verbs like enquirewant to know or wonder.

Alberto's new neighbours

Alberto took one look at his new neighbours and knew that his life was going to get more difficult. He watched them arrive in their big, noisy car and watched them get out. There they were, two of them, as big and as noisy as their car – and smelly and stupid as well.
'Terrible!' he thought. 'How am I going to put up with them?' He went to tell Mimi. Mimi was the friend he lived with.
'Have you seen the new neighbours?' he asked her.
'No,' she said. 'Who are they?'
'Two of them. The ones we don’t like. Big and noisy and stupid and smelly. Just like they always are.'
'Oh no,' said Mimi. 'How awful! Still, I suppose we can just ignore them.'
'I suppose you're right,' agreed Alberto. 'We'll just have to ignore them.'
For a few days, then, Alberto and Mimi tried to ignore their new neighbours. When the neighbours went out for a walk, Alberto and Mimi didn't say hello to them. When the neighbours were in their garden, Alberto and Mimi went inside. This was OK for a few days, but, perhaps inevitably, things didn't stay this way …
One day, Alberto woke up from his sleep to find one of the neighbours in his garden. 'Mimi!' he shouted. 'Have you seen this!? He's in our garden!!!! Look!'
'How terrible,' said Mimi. 'Let's call our staff and make sure they get rid of him immediately!'
Mimi went off to call their staff. Two minutes later, Alberto and Mimi's head of staff was out in the garden trying to get rid of the unwelcome neighbour. 'Go on!' he shouted. 'Get out of here! Go home!' The neighbour didn't say anything but gave Alberto and Mimi's head of staff a dirty look, then he went back into his garden. Alberto and Mimi felt better and then asked their head of staff to prepare their lunch for them.
However, it wasn't enough. Over the next few days, Alberto and Mimi often found one or other or both of their new neighbours walking around their own garden. It was terrible. To show how they felt, Alberto and Mimi went into their neighbours' garden at night, when the neighbours were inside, and broke all the flowers.
The next morning one of the neighbours came to talk to Alberto.
'Hey!' he said. 'Hey, you!' Alberto ignored him, but he continued talking. 'You came into our garden last night and broke all the flowers!' Alberto didn't say anything but gave his neighbour a dirty look. 'Now I'm in trouble!' continued his neighbour. 'They think I did it!'
'Who are "they"?' asked Alberto.
'My owners, of course,' replied the neighbour.
'Owners!?' said Alberto. 'You have "owners"?'
'Course we do,' said his neighbour. 'Don't you?'
'Oh, no,' replied Alberto. 'We have staff.'
Alberto went to tell Mimi that the neighbours didn't have staff but owners.
'That's not a surprise,' said Mimi. 'That explains everything. That's why they're so noisy and smelly and stupid. We need to make their owners become staff.'
The next day, Alberto and Mimi were actually very friendly with their new neighbours. They tried to explain how to make their owners become 'staff'.
'Listen,' said Alberto to them. 'It's very easy. First, understand that the house is your house, not theirs.'
'And second,' said Mimi, 'make sure that you are always clean.'
'Make sure they give you food whenever you want!'
'Sit on the newspaper while they are reading it!'
'Sleep as much as possible – on their beds!'
'And finally, try not to bark but to miaow instead.'
But it was no good. The neighbours just didn't understand. After a week, they gave up.
'It's no good,' said Mimi. 'They'll never understand – dogs have owners, cats have staff.'
